Description
3D SCANNED INTERIOR PLANTS
Today, with the evolution of rendering engines and capture techniques, both for materials and geometric scanning, we can find high-quality 3D models and materials on the market. However, realistic vegetation remains a challenge in 3D due to the natural complexity of plants and some limitations of capture methods.
At 3D Collective, we have dedicated more than a year of R&D trying to provide a high quality solution for all those who seek the highest level of photorealism in the development of their 3D projects. This first vegetation pack is the synthesis of our work. In it you can find scanned 3D indoor plants that stand out for their high degree of realism, a standardized PBR material system to work in any project and circumstance and a simple structure so that they do not imply an overload of resources.
WHAT DOES THIS PACK INCLUDE?
- 48 3D models of scanned plants of 8 different species
- 168 Textures 4K
- 14 scanned pots
- 13 Hand-modeled pots
- 4 Additional decorative 3D models
- Compatible with V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT, Corona 7 and OBJ
SCANNED TEXTURES
To achieve realistic results, it is important to obtain information as accurate as possible from the real world. In the case of plants, it is essential to capture at least these 3 real-world data in order to guarantee good results:
- Accurate normal maps
- Color maps without reflections Front and Back
- Calibrated translucency
Albedo maps without reflections with Cross Polarization
When capturing photographs with the purpose of recreating in 3D the behavior of light on plants, a technique is necessary to separate the specular reflections from the diffusse. For this purpose, we have resorted to Cross Polarization, a technique that allows us to scan both components separately, thus avoiding having reflections in our diffusse, which allows us to have incredibly realistic leafs.
To guarantee better results and obtain a better resolution, the leafs that make up our atlases have been individually scanned in high resolution (8K) which allows to obtain a great amount of fine detail in the final 4K Atlas map.
High precision normal maps
There are different methods to scan geometry such as photogrammetry or laser scanning. However, these 2 techniques, as they are methods designed to create a triangular geometry in 3D, have the limitation of triangles size. For these cases, a technique called “Photometric Stereo” is usually more interesting, because the amount of details It no longer depends on the number of triangles, but on the number of pixels of our camera. Fortunately, today we have cameras with very high resolutions that allow us to create normal maps with a detail difficult to achieve in geometric scanning techniques.
All normal maps in this pack have been obtained using photometric stereo, which provides a very realistic result compared to other 3D models of plants where the normal map is extracted from the diffuse, which produces a very unrealistic result.
As can be seen in the following comparison, the scanned normal map is one of the most important maps when creating realistic vegetation since, if done correctly, it allows a large amount of detail that breaks up the reflections, generating a result practically indistinguishable from the reference photograph.
Calibrated translucency maps
Another important aspects when representing plants in 3D is the characteristic translucency effect. We often find 3D models where the translucency maps have been “made up” from a normal photograph, this is incorrect since when the light passes through the leaves directly from behind the behavior is different, which makes a strategy necessary to capture this information independently.
To achieve accurate data, we have used backlighting and calibrated the intensity of the translucency so that the 3D result is as realistic as possible.
Realistic 3D Models
Another essential aspect for 3D vegetation to look realistic is detailed modeling that respects the natural anatomy of plants and contains sufficient detail to create the illusion of reality as well as detailed 3D models of planter.
There are several applications for plant modeling such as GrowFX or SpeedTree. However, manual modeling often offers the ability to model details that are not possible to achieve with these automated tools. In this pack we have combined GrowFX modeling techniques with a lot of manual modeling to make the plants look their best.
Plant pots scanned by photogrammetry
In this pack we have also used photogrammetry to scan some of the pots that accompany the plants, thus adding an extra degree of realism.
