WHAT IS THE PHOTOGRAMMETRY PROCESS AND WHY DOES IT OFFERS SUCH GOOD RESULTS?

If we want to create 3D models as realistic as possible, instead of using polygonal modeling techniques or digital sculpture, we can resort to several methods of “scanning” surfaces and textures such as photogrammetry, using hundreds of photographs of the same object taken from different angles to reconstruct the geometry of a complex model using specialized software. One of the advantages of photogrammetry, compared to other scanning methods, is that we can simultaneously scan the geometry and color of our object  to create a photorealistic ready to use model.

To produce a single 3D model with millions of polygons and correct linear albedo, we use high resolution cameras (50MP +) and more than 200 photographs per object under controlled lighting conditions. Given the large number of initial polygons, it’s necessary to adapt them for use in real projects. Through retopology we reduce the polygonal load of 3D models and create PBR textures of 4K and 2K.

The result is excellent, but this method requires very expensive special equipment (high resolution camera, studio lights, software, etc.) and it takes a long time to produce a single finished model (scanning, geometry creation, retopology, texture baking, materials, etc).

OPTIMIZED RETOPOLOGY FOR PROJECTS

HIgh resolution camera Photogrammetry is excellent for capturing three-dimensional models with a lot of geometric details, but to be able to use these models efficiently it’s necessary to transform the scanned model into a lower polygonal resolution model and transfer the high frequency details of the model to a normal map. All the models of this library are optimized to reduce their polygonal load and have normal maps of 4K and 2K, they are thought out to be used in both personal and professional projects.

TEXTURES AND PBR MATERIALS 

In addition to an optimized geometry, all the models in this pack have textures and PBR materials for V-Ray 3.5 or superior.

The albedo has been obtained from linear photographs calibrated with color checker, the normal map has been extracted directly from the high resolution geometry, and if needed, the models have a glossiness map. All textures are offered in 2 resolutions:

• 4K recommended for high-resolution renderings or close ups.
• 2K for general use.

All the PBR materials in this pack have been designed for Vray 3.5 or superior in order to take advantage of the “Glossy Fresnel” option of the render engine that gives you the best PBR results in the most effective way. The result in previous versions of VRay may not be the same as the images in the catalog.
